How I Made My iPhone Battery Last Over 6 Years (And How You Can Too!)

Several years ago, I read a blog post about making a laptop battery last longer. The article suggested installing software that would limit charging the battery to 80% or less.

The author was making a claim that keeping the battery charged at 100% all the time would diminish the battery life much faster.

The author was correct! My laptop’s battery life lasted much longer than I expected.

Would this same idea work on smartphones?

I could not find an app that did this on my iPhone, so I started doing it manually. I started applying this concept when I bought a brand-new iPhone 8 in 2016.

I would charge my phone throughout the day for small periods of time. When I was driving to the store or work, I would charge my phone. I would charge my phone when taking a shower. When I was sitting at my desk for a long time and needed to charge my phone, I would keep an eye on it while charging it.

I would also get the battery as low as possible before charging it. When the phone gave me the “Low Power Mode” warning, that was my cue to charge it for 30 minutes.

Of course, sometimes I accidentally let it charge past 80%. In those situations, I would let it charge to 100% if the charge was…
